Shapiro Administration and Department of Community and Economic Development held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc.<\/a> (MEPPI) facility in the Pittsburgh region. MEPPI\u2019s $86 million expansion will create at least 200 new jobs and retain 806 employees while expanding Pennsylvania\u2019s energy manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Announced by Gov. Josh Shapiro in October 2024<\/a>, the commonwealth provided $6.7 million in funding for the company\u2019s expansion in southwestern Pennsylvania. The new switchgear facility and expanded power electronics and testing lab will allow MEPPI to shift production from gas-insulated to vacuum circuit breakers. MEPPI\u2019s switchgear and power electronics solutions are used in response to increasing electricity demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPPI received a funding proposal from DCED for a $4 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant and a $2.75 million Pennsylvania First grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This follows recent investments in the region as part of ongoing efforts to support public-private energy partnerships. In October 2024, Mainspring Energy received $87 million from the Department of Energy (DOE) to fund a 300,000-square-foot clean-tech manufacturing facility in Pittsburgh, expected to create more than 600 jobs. Westinghouse, a key player in the city\u2019s energy sector, is currently developing its carbon-free, safe and scalable energy technology, the eVinci microreactor, in its 87,420-square-foot facility. In April 2024, JM Steel and Nextracker expanded manufacturing lines to produce steel torque tubes for Nextracker\u2019s large-scale solar power arrays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
